Defeat in Gladbach

At the end of their third away game of the season, VfB were left with nothing to show for their determined efforts. Hannes Wolf’s men were particularly defensively disciplined for much of the tie and managed to keep the Borussia Mönchengladbach attack largely at bay. With an hour played though, the hosts found a way through the VfB stronghold and took the lead. Simon Terodde & Co. refused to throw in the towel, even having conceded a second goal from the penalty spot and even created a number of chances, but the Wasenelf efforts were to prove in vain. After ninety minutes, the score stood at 0-2 from the Cannstatt Boy’s viewpoint.

Prior to kick-off, the team sent a wonderful message of solidarity to captain Christian Gentner, as they went through their pre-match warm up programme wearing jackets with the number 20 and the captain’s name.

The low-down

Having won their second home game, VfB were eager to follow up during this week’s busy schedule with their first away points, having suffered defeats on their travels in Berlin (0-2) and at Schalke (1-3).

Mönchengladbach went into the game one point and one place behind the Wasenelf. Having beaten 1. FC Köln 1-0 on the opening day, there followed two draws and a defeat for the ‚Fohlenelf‘. At the weekend, Dieter Hecking’s men earned a 2-2 draw in Leipzig.

Personnel

With Christian Gentner out of the reckoning, Simon Terodde donned the captain’s armband, with the 32 replaced on the night by Orel Mangala. Chadrac Akolo, suffered a muscular strain against Wolfsburg and duly failed to make the 18-man squad. The attacker was replaced up-front in Gladbach by Takuma Asano.

Dennis Aogo:

The penalty was decisive. After the 0-1, we had the chances to bounce back. In the scene which led to the penalty, I made a quick grab at my opponent, but I don’t think the contact was enough to cause him to fall. He made use of the situation cleverly. That was very frustrating. Even after the 0-2, we had our chances, but we couldn’t make them count.

Summed up

At the end of the ninety minutes, there was another sobering result for VfB away from home. The side in the shirts with the infamous red hoop impressed defensively for much of the tie. Even having gone behind, the Cannstatt Boys refused to throw in the towel and continued to press forward, creating a number of openings, which were unfortunately left untaken. Although the VfB crew again make the journey home to Stuttgart with nothing to show for their efforts, there is no accusing the team of not giving their all.

Highlights
33rd minute VfB are operating from a compact defence, presenting themselves as willing and determined in undermining the Gladbach attack. The best chance thus far for the hosts – a shot from 16 meters out by Lars Stindl, which Ron-Robert Zieler deals with comfortably.
44th minute Coach Hannes Wolf’s men come through the first-half unscathed, on the back of an extremely solid defensive display, although the side in the shirts with the infamous red hoop are unable to create many openings of their own. Orel Mangala tries his luck from 20 meters out, but fires over the bar as the game goes into the half-time break.
46th minute VfB open the second period with a good chance to break the deadlock. Latching onto a pass from Takuma Asano Simon Terodde bears down on goal, but slots his shot wide of the far post.
57th minute Following the early chance for VfB, the hosts begin to gain ever more possession and duly take the lead. A one-two combination between Raffael and Nico Elvedi is converted by the Brazilian, to make it 1-0.
69th minute VfB make an attacking response. Substitute Josip Brekalo gets a bobbling shot away, but Gladbach keeper Tobias Sippel is equal to the effort.
74th minute The home side make it 2-0 – the Borussia goal-scorer once again: Raffael. The Brazilian fires home from the penalty-spot, after Dennis Aogo is adjudged to have fouled Eden Hazard in the box.
90th minute + 2 Andreas Beck forces an excellent save from Gladbach keeper Tobias Sippel. VfB put on the pressure late in search of a way back into the tie, but there is to be no joy for the Cannstatt Boys. The final whistle is blown after four minutes of added-time.
