Post-match comments

Hannes Wolf: "We initially had the plan of taking an offensive approach and pressing our opponents. That didn’t work out because of the way Gladbach played and we duly interpreted the job more defensively. On the whole, we had very few attacking opportunities, but Borussia didn’t have many chances on goal either. That was similar early in the second-half, but then Gladbach opened the scoring with a quick attack on the wing. Subsequently we had more openings going forward, but didn’t reward ourselves with a goal. Even after the penalty, we had some attacking situations. Considering the problems we’ve had over the past few days, with the loss of Christian Gentner and Chadrac Akolo, the team did well – which is something we intend to take into the Augsburg match. However, we are frustrated by the defeat."

Ron-Robert Zieler: "We defended very well for long stretches of the game. Our top priority was to maintain a clean-sheet at the back, which we managed to do for a long period. With that in mind, I had a good feeling we could take something from this match. Then we went behind from pretty much out of nowhere. The second goal we conceded was particularly frustrating. On the attack, we lacked the ultimate punch."

Dennis Aogo: "The penalty was decisive. After the 0-1, we had the chances to bounce back. In the scene which led to the penalty, I made a quick grab at my opponent, but I don’t think the contact was enough to cause him to fall. He made use of the situation cleverly. That was very frustrating. Even after the 0-2, we had our chances, but we couldn’t make them count."
