In front of a crowd of 58,716 in the Mercedes-Benz Arena on Friday evening, VfB secured a 2-1 win over 1. FC Köln – a victory which saw Hannes Wolf’s men extended their unbeaten home run further still. In their fourth game of the current campaign, the Cannstatt Boys remain undefeated on their home turf (three wins, one draw). The closing minutes of the game proved an absolute rollercoaster ride – first the VfB fateful held their breath awaiting the outcome of a video-referee decision, before Chadrac Akolo made it 2-1 and then Ron-Robert Zieler was forced to make a strong save to prevent a last gasp equaliser for the visitors. The only dampener on VfB claiming all three points was the ankle injury to Marcin Kaminski. The Polish defender was later taken to hospital for further examinations on the joint.
Personnel
Compared to the side that began in Frankfurt before the international break, coach Hannes Wolf made three changes to his starting eleven, with Andreas Beck, Chadrac Akolo and Daniel Ginczek making way for Orel Mangala, Josip Brekalo and Simon Terodde from the outset. On the night, Emiliano Insua was back in the VfB squad again. The defender, who was an almost ever-present in the shirt with the infamous red hoop over the past two season, suffered a severe cut to his thigh in August, which put him out of action.
11th minute | Both sides begin the game with a great deal of tempo and there are chances at either end within the first quarter-hour. The first opening fell to Köln through Yuya Osako after just five minutes. Then Anastasios Donis let fly from the edge of the opposite box, but sent his shot clear of the crossbar. |
36th minute | VfB go close to opening the scoring. An initial effort by Josip Brekalo is blocked. The loose ball falls to Anastasios Donis, whose shot is cleared off the line by Timo Horn. |
38th minute | Finally White-Red celebrations in the packed Mercedes-Benz Arena: Taking on a through ball from Simon Terodde, Anastasios Donis nets his first Bundesliga goal in the shirt with the infamous red hoop. The Greek international is VfB’s most notable attacker in the first-half. |
77th minute | VfB concede their first goal of this season in front of their home fans: Dominique Heintz cuts inside from the right and curls home the equaliser from 18 meters out. |
88th minute | A shock-moment for VfB late on: In a challenge with Dennis Aogo, Köln’s Sehrou Guirassy goes tumbling to the floor in the VfB box. The referee requires the assistance of the video referee and eventually opts for a hop-ball instead of a penalty for Köln. |
90th +4 | Chadrac Akolo makes it 2-1 for VfB! The shot, following a good solo run, takes a decisive deflection – resulting in an eruption of celebration amongst the home fans! |
90th +5 | A massive chance to equalise once again for Sehrou Guirassy, but Ron-Robert Zieler juts a leg out to turn the ball around the post. The final action of the game. |
Dennis Aogo:
It was very evenly balanced game. Unfortunately we again made errors and we couldn’t have complained if this game ended in a draw. Ultimately, we were the lucky winners. These type of games are the reason we love football. Emotional rollercoasters like tonight are brilliant, when you win at the end.
Summed-up
It could hardly have been any more of a nail-biter for VfB. The Cannstatt Boys first survived a nervous wait for a decision by referee Benjamin Cortus at the video-screen – the ultimate decision, a hop-ball instead of a penalty for Köln. Shortly afterwards, Chadrac Akolo then sunk a deflected shot to make it 2-1 for the hosts. On the whole, it was a deserved win for Hannes Wolf’s eleven, who created a plus on chances throughout the game and probably should have decided the tie in their favour earlier.
