Bitter trip to Munich

Despite making a good start and deservedly taking the lead, VfB Stuttgart crashed to a devastating 1-6 (1-3) away to FC Bayern Munich. In the second half, Vedad Ibisevic was sent off.

There was no time for making a cautious start and testing the water at the Allianz-Arena on Sunday. VfB made an energetic and determined start, defending high up the park and disrupting the Bayern flow early on. With just four minutes played, the guests very nearly took the lead. Martin Harnik dribbled into the Bayern penalty area, rounded Boateng and let fly with a left footed effort, which German national team goalkeeper Manuel Neuer managed to get fingertips to and turn against the bar.

Harnik opens the VfB account

In the 25th minute though, there was nothing to stop the celebrations of the VfB fans. Following a challenge with Ibisevic, Boateng needed treatment and Arthur Boka swung in a free-kick from the left. Pulling away from his marker, Martin Harnik met the delivery on the volley, beating Neuer to make it 1-0 for VfB (25’).

Bayern’s double-whammy

Within a 73 second period though, the German record all-time title holders turned the tie back in their favour. Firstly Thomas Müller volleyed a Mario Mandzukic delivery goalwards, which Sven Ulreich could only parry and the German international reacted quickest to pounce on the loose ball and slam home to make it 1-1 (32’).

Just over a minute later, Toni Kross won possession following an error in the VfB midfield and fired his shot unstoppably past Ulreich to put Bayern in the driving seat. It was then a further powerful drive from distance that increased the FC advantage yet further. Luiz Gustavo was allowed to settle on the ball and whip a stunning effort home from 25 meters out – 3-1, which was to prove the score-line at the break.

VfB goalkeeper Sven Ulreich: “Within the space of just four minutes we completely let the game get away from us due to individual errors.” Post match comments

Three goals in four minutes

For the second period, Tunay Torun was sent into action in place of Tamas Hajnal. The first chance of the half fell to the home side, and they took their opportunity thankfully. Again Ulreich stopped the initial shot but Mandzukic was on hand to pick up the pieces and make it 4-1 (47’). The misery was not yet over for VfB though – with Bayern increasing their advantage to 5-1 just two minutes later as Thomas Müller headed home. The hosts looked to be on fire and had the half-dozen on the board just 120 second later. Müller fed Schweinsteiger, who headed past the stranded Ulreich.

Ibisevic sees red

Following a hefty tackle between Jerome Boateng and Vedad Ibisevic, the Bayern defender confronted the VfB man, who reacted with an attack on the German international which was to cost Ibisevic the red card – a somewhat harsh decision. In the end it was to prove a game to forget for all at VfB.
