Important home win

Following two successive narrow defeats, VfB finally rewarded themselves for their massive efforts with a totally deserved 3-0 win over Europa League participants Hannover 96 at the Mercedes-Benz Arena on Saturday afternoon. VfB’s goals on the day were scored by Shinji Okazaki, Zdravko Kuzmanovic and Serdar Tasci. On the day, the extent of the deficit was not in any way flattering for the home side.

Trainer Bruno Labbadia made two changes to the side which began in Berlin a fortnight ago. Back from suspension, Khalid Boulahrouz returned to the starting eleven in place of Stefano Celozzi and Christian Gentner began in role of playmaker, getting the nod ahead of Tamas Hajnal.

Right from the outset, the home side made it clear that they intended to ensure the points stayed in Stuttgart. After just five minutes, Boulahrouz tested H96 keeper Ron-Robert Zieler with a deflected shot from 17 meters out and five minutes later, the home fans had an opening goal to celebrate. Martin Harnik brought a delivery from the right, which found Shinji Okazaki, who, at the second attempt, drove the ball into the top of the net from close range to make it 1-0 – an advantage which Labbadia’s men would take into the break.

Seconds later, Okazaki turned H96 captain Cherundolo inside out

Shortly after the re-start, Sven Ulreich had the opportunity to show what he is capable of. Lars Stindl played a low pass to Ya Konan, who shot on the turn, but the VfB keeper was quick to avert the danger, managing also to prevent a rebound from Stindl from causing any concern. Shortly after, at the other end, Kuzmanovic set up a free-kick from17 meters out but drove his effort high over the target. The Serbian international tried his luck again minutes later but on this occasion the keeper was equal to the effort. In the 61st minute, Cristian Molinaro broke down the left and then hammered a cross into the centre, where Serdar Tasci narrowly missed out. Seconds later Okazaki, turned H96 captain Cherundolo inside out and crossed but Harnik’s header proved off the mark.

VfB-Cheftrainer Bruno Labbadia: "The team showed from the very first minute that they were determined to win the game."

At the opposite end, Ya Konan had an opportunity to put the visitors back on level terms but Ulreich was quick to narrow the angle and the chance was lost. The second half of the game was not nearly as high quality on footballing terms as the first but both sides managed to create openings and the tension remained. In the 76th minute, Moritz Stoppelkamp found Ya Konan, who could only volley wide of the goal. Two minutes later though, the VfB fans were on their feet again to cheer the return of Timo Gebhart. The fans hardly had time to take their seats again before they were up and celebrating. In the 79th minute, Kuzmanovic let fly from 25 meters and rattled the back of the net to make it 2-0.

Five minutes before the end, Serdar Tasci made sure of the points by making it 3-0 for the home side. Substitute Tamas Hajnal swung in a free-kick, which Pavel Pogrebnyak nodded on to the back post, where Tasci got a touch, to take the ball beyond the keeper and earn VfB a 3-0 win. So may it continue!
