Season over for Andreas Beck

The full-back has suffered a partial rupture to the frontal cruciate ligament in his right knee. There was better news on Benjamin Pavard.

Andreas Beck will not wear the shirt with the infamous red hoop in the Bundesliga again this season. The full-back was forced out of Saturday’s clash with Hannover 96 at half-time. A subsequent examination has since revealed that the 31-year-old suffered a partial rupture d to the frontal cruciate ligament of his right knee. The injury will be treated conservatively, with surgery unnecessary under the current circumstances. Andreas Beck returned to VfB before the season got underway and has since played 23 league games for the Cannstatt Boys, scoring one goal and providing one assist. Last Saturday was the defender’s 50th Bundesliga outing for the Wasenelf.

There was however more positive news from Benjamin Pavard, the only VfB player not to have missed a minute of Bundesliga action this season: The 22-year-old incurred an injury to the ligaments of his right ankle during the game against Hannover 96. As to whether the French international will make fitness in time for this Saturday’s home game against SV Werder Bremen (kick-off 15:30 CET) remains to be seen.

VfB Sporting Director Michael Reschke: "It’s a bitter pill for Andreas Beck personally, but also for us as a club. With his immense experience, Andi gave us great stability in recent months and was a vital pillar in the team both on, as well as away from, the pitch. We wish him all the very best for his period in rehabilitation. We firmly believe he will quickly put this setback behind him in his positive and professional manner."
