"Perform at our best"

On Saturday, Hannes Wolf and his men will be looking to end quite an exceptional year at home with a success against FC Bayern Munich. The availability of Chadrac Akolo remains unclear.

In the final Bundesliga game of the year, on Saturday afternoon (kick-off 15:30 CET), VfB play host to FC Bayern Munich in front of a 58,900 strong crowd in the capacity-filled Mercedes-Benz Arena. The visitors have won twelve of their sixteen games and lost just two. The title holders, currently lead the table at almost the half-way point in the season by a clear nine points. As much as the figure itself says about the quality of this weekend’s opponents, Hannes Wolf by no means sees his team as being without a chance. "When you play against FC Bayern, it’s always a huge challenge, but we go into every game we play with the goal of coming out with a win," insisted Hannes Wolf, adding "We must now continue to defend well and develop some penetrative power from that on the attack."

Although FC Bayern have won their last three Bundesliga games and have conceded just eleven goals so far this season, their performances throughout the campaign have shown that the club from Bavaria and not completely invulnerable. "If you do the job really, really well, you will find the space and situations to create chances on goal," noted the VfB coach, continuing: "We again want to give our all, be courageous, play with intensity and perform at our best, so that we can finish an exceptional year at home on a high."

Chadrac Akolo remains a doubt

With 24 hours to go before kick-off, exactly which players will be available for selection is as yet not completely clear. One certainty for Wolf, is that he will have to make at least one alteration to his starting eleven from Wednesday’s clash with Hoffenheim. Having incurred a muscle sinew tear to the buttock area, Anastasios Donis will miss out on the game against Bayern, as well as the DFB-Cup ‚Round of 16‘ clash with FSV Mainz 05 on Tuesday (18:30 CET). The availability of Chadrac Akolo remains undecided. The VfB striker incurred bruised ribs during the game in Hoffenheim and is still suffering from the effects. If the injury does not impair the front-man’s mobility too severely, it is possible that he could make the squad for the FC Bayern game.
