Match summary
Early deficit
Sebastian Hoeneß’s side fell behind early on. Alexander Nübel saved from both Anton Kade and Alexis Claude-Maurice, but was powerless to prevent Fabian Rieder from netting on the rebound in the eighth minute.
Equaliser from the spot
In the 14th minute, Keven Schlotterbeck brought down Dan-Axel Zagadou in the box. Following a lengthy VAR review, referee Harm Osmers awarded a penalty, which Maximilian Mittelstädt confidently converted. Four minutes later, Deniz Undav’s low shot towards the right corner was pushed away by Finn Dahmen.
Massengo and Undav strike
The crowd saw two more goals before half-time. Han-Noah Massengo put the visitors back in front in the 26th minute, but VfB gave the perfect response, Undav heading in the equaliser from a sumptuous cross from Bilal El Khannouss in the 38th minute.
Undav with the winner
Hoeneß’s men took charge of the game in the second half, although they were fortunate in the 77th minute, when the unmarked Samuel Essende squandered a golden opportunity right in front of goal. Augsburg were punished for their profligacy just three minutes later, when Undav completed his brace after a lovely combination between Chris Führich and Angelo Stiller, sealing a 3-2 win for VfB.
Goals
8th minute: Nübel saves strongly from Kade and Claude-Maurice’s efforts, but Rieder is in space eight metres from the Stuttgart goal to slot in the rebound.
18th minute: Mittelstädt sends the goalkeeper the wrong way from the penalty spot with a low strike into the left corner.
26th minute: Nübel plays the ball to Atakan Karazor on the edge of his box. He’s dispossessed by a firm challenge from Massengo, who then puts Augsburg 2-1 up with a shot into the left corner.
38th minute: Undav heads an inviting cross from El Khannouss into the left corner from close range.
80th minute: Führich passes to Stiller, who lays it off to Undav on the edge of the area. The VfB striker’s whipped shot takes a deflection on its way into the Augsburg net.
