There were no goals between VfB and Schalke in Gelsenkirchen on Saturday. The visitors created some good chances in the first half and even managed to put the ball in the back of the net, but the offside flag denied them a final-day away win.
Team news
Interim coach Nico Willig made no fewer than six changes from the previous match. Dennis Aogo, Timo Baumgartl, Holger Badstuber, Borna Sosa, Daniel Didavi and Mario Gomez all took to the field at the Veltins-Arena, while Ozan Kabak, Gonzalo Castro, Chadrac Akolo, Anastasios Donis and Nico Gonzalez dropped to the bench. Marc Oliver Kempf was not in the squad at all, with his place taken by youngster David Kopacz.
7th minute | VfB apply some early pressure and craft the first opportunity of the game, but Sosa’s shot is too high. |
16th minute | Gomez bundles the ball over the line from a corner but the striker was standing in an offside position when Aogo headed the ball on, so the goal is disallowed by referee Robert Schröder. |
27th minute | Didavi cuts in from the right and shoots. Schalke captain Benjamin Stambouli deflects the ball onto the crossbar. |
90th minute | The match finishes in a draw – a fair result on reflection. |
Mario Gomez:
We wanted to stay in competitive mode and we did that. We now have two massively important games ahead of us. We want to come through the relegation play-off and I’m confident we’ll pull it off.
Summary
Following a decent away performance at Schalke, VfB now head into their relegation play-off as they attempt to retain their Bundesliga status. The first leg takes place at the Mercedes-Benz-Arena this Thursday, followed by the second leg on 27 May.
