As referee Deniz Aytekin blew the final whistle on the clash between SC Freiburg and VfB, one thing was absolutely clear: Both sides had finally picked up their first point of the season. Over the course of the 94 minutes of play, the fans from both sides were treated to an unyielding emotional roller-coaster.
Personnel:
VfB head coach Tayfun Korkut made two changes to the eleven that began in the home game against FC Bayern Munich: For the first time since recovering from a cruciate-ligament tear, Andreas Beck was back in from the outset, replacing Pablo Maffeo at right full-back. Up front, Nicolás Gonzalez got the nod ahead of Anastasios Donis. The injured Daniel Didavi (Achilles tendon problems) and Marc Oliver Kempf (thigh muscle-sinew tear) were both absent from the squad.
1st minute | With just 48 seconds played, the ball nestles in the back of the VfB net. Head coach Tayfun Korkut’s men lose possession in the opponent’s half and are caught out by a lightening quick Freiburg counter-attack. Florian Niederlechner drives the ball through the midfield before spreading a pass wide to Mike Frantz. The SC captain launches a precise cross into the Stuttgart box, where Jerôme Gondorf heads home to make it 1-0. |
44th minute | With a perfectly executed drive from 17 meters out, Emiliano Insua levels the scores on the stroke of half-time – his first Bundesliga goal. Freiburg are unable to convincingly clear a VfB corner and the ball falls to Emiliano Insua. The Argentine takes a touch and then let’s fly with a powerful left-footed drive – Unstoppable! |
48th minute | Now it’s VfB with an early goal! Christian Gentner lofts a delivery into the box, which Nicolás Gonzalez nods back for the unmarked Mario Gomez. The VfB striker, making his 300th Bundesliga appearance, heads on goal. The initial effort is parried by Freiburg keeper Alexander Schwolow, but Mario Gomez immediately pounces on the loose ball and slams it into the top of the net. |
52nd minute | Just four minutes after VfB took the lead, SC his back to make it 2-2. Once again, the goal-scorer is Jerôme Gondorf. This time it’s a directly converted free-kick into the bottom right corner from 20 meters out. |
56th minute | And Mario Gomez adds his second! Again the hosts are unable to clear convincingly and Emiliano Insua wins possession on the left wing. A perfectly weighted cross finds Mario Gomez on the penalty-spot. The striker is a step quicker than his marker and flicks his header into the bottom right corner, putting VfB back in the driving seat again. |
81st minute | The home side level the scores once again! Luca Waldschmidt takes possession on the edge of the box, holds off a number of VfB defenders and unleashes a shot from 13, 14 meters out. The effort is deflected inside the near post by Benjamin Pavard. |
83rd minute | VfB are facing ten men for the final seven minutes. Freiburg‘s Pascal Stenzel, who was booked ten minutes previously, brings down Benjamin Pavard on a VfB attack and is duly shown a second yellow card! |
Tayfun Korkut:
Today was a small step – that we can live with! We have to see to it now that we make the big step in our up-coming home match.
Summed-up:
Away to SC Freiburg, VfB finally secured their first point of the season – but it could well have been all three points in the Stuttgart bag! The side in the shirts with the infamous hoop caused themselves a number of problems through unforced errors in the first-half, leading to the hosts taking the lead with just 48 seconds on the clock. In spite of ultimately having the bulk of the possession in the first period, the Cannstatt Boys struggled to create clear openings – but an equaliser on the stroke of half-time would change that! A boost to the VfB performance following the leveller was then to be rewarded, with coach Tayfun Korkut’s men taking 2-1 and 3-2 leads – but the Wasenelf were ultimately unable to maintain their advantages.
