Markus Weinzierl’s side were beaten 3-1 by RB Leipzig on another disappointing afternoon for the Cannstatt club and the majority of the 46,072 supporters packed inside the Mercedes-Benz Arena. VfB produced a much-improved display and managed to cancel out the visitors’ early opener, but Ralf Rangnick’s team ultimately proved too strong.
Personnel
Weinzierl made three changes to the team that lost 3-0 to Fortuna Düsseldorf last time out. Mario Gomez returned from suspension to replace Nicolas Gonzalez, who was sent off at the Merkur Spiel-Arena last weekend. Gonzalo Castro and Andreas Beck also came into the side in place of Christian Gentner and Daniel Didavi.
6th minute | VfB start confidently and cause the visiting rearguard one or two problems in the opening stages, but Leipzig strike first. The VfB defence fail to clear Timo Werner’s cross from the left wing, allowing Yussuf Poulsen to open the scoring from close range. |
16th minute | The Cannstatt club respond well to falling behind and are awarded a penalty via VAR when Willi Orban is adjudged to have handled Gomez’s header across goal. Steven Zuber fires home his first goal for the club from the resulting spot-kick. |
68th minute | Weinzierl’s team had almost gone in front a few moments earlier, but Leipzig retake the lead when Marcel Sabitzer curls a free-kick past Ron-Robert Zieler from around 20 metres. |
74th minute | Leipzig make it 3-1, Poulsen finishing off a flowing counterattack for his second and the visitors’ third of the game. |
93rd minute | VfB refuse to let their heads drop and continue to search for a route back into the match. Gomez has a goal ruled out for offside as Leipzig hold on to claim the three points. |
Mario Gomez:
Today’s performance definitely gives us strength. We stood shoulder to shoulder with a very good opponent. We were aggressive at the back and created good opportunities up front. We need to keep playing like this in the coming weeks.
Summary
Having urged his charges to show a “different side” to their game against Leipzig, Weinzierl will have been proud of his team’s display at the Mercedes-Benz Arena. Committed and strong in the tackle, the hosts contributed to an open contest that for long periods looked like it could go either way. After cancelling out Poulsen’s early opener, VfB kept fighting after Sabitzer’s free-kick and piled pressure on the visitors in the closing stages. Leipzig made the most of the extra space afforded to them, however, and sealed the points with just over a quarter of an hour left to play.
