Tayfun Korkut: "It was a clash of two sides that had both taken a lot of points in recent weeks. We knew that in Werder Bremen, we would be facing a side capable of displaying good footballing elements on the pitch. We played very well in the first-half and could have even added to our 1-0. In the second-half we concentrated more on our defensive duties, not least as Bremen increased the pressure. Today was exactly the opposite of last week, when we failed to add that second goal. Now we have reached our target. My compliments to the team for their energetic performances over the past few weeks. The lads have unconditionally stuck to the plan and presented themselves as a team. There have been no egoism whatsoever – be that within the team, amongst the coaching staff or with the functional staff. Everyone played their part to ensure we could work in peace towards achieving our goal. I also must acknowledge the fans, who were particularly loud in their support between the 80th and 90th minute. They have a great sense of when the team really needs their backing. The connection there was phenomenal. We are naturally delighted, but in the coming weeks we have games ahead which we intend to give our all in, just as we have over the last few weeks."
Mario Gomez: "It’s a fantastic feeling to now have assured our top-flight status. We had been in a very good position, but now we have finally sealed the deal. I am really delighted for the two lads who haven’t played much of late, combined to score such a great goal. The atmosphere in the stadium was exceptional. I’ve really got to compliment the fans for that."
Timo Baumgartl: "I am delighted we’ve now passed the 40-point mark. That was our express goal. We did the job well today and used the counter-attack well at the end to make it 2-0. At half-time, we declared we wanted that second goal. In Tassos, we introduced a pacy man who works well on the break. The fact that he had a part to play in Berkay’s 2-0 really pleases me."
