For VfB, one disappointing run come to an end, whilst another more gratifying run continues – and both thanks to yet another impressive defensive performance. Following seven consecutive defeats to FC Augsburg, on Saturday afternoon, the Cannstatt Boys finally picked up a point again against FCA and thus remain unbeaten at home in the Mercedes-Benz Arena in 2017. The 0-0 draw in front of a crowd of 55,202 saw two VfB comebacks.
Personnel
Hannes Wolf made two changes to his starting eleven from the game four days ago away to Borussia Mönchengladbach (0-2). Holger Badstuber, who had been side-lined with an adductor problem, not only returned to the squad, but immediately took a place in the starting eleven at the heart of the defence. Subsequently, Benjamin Pavard shifting into defensive-midfield, at the expense of Orel Mangala (bench). Up front, Josip Brekalo got the nod on this occasion ahead of Takuma Asano. Whilst Daniel Ginczek returned from a knee injury to take a place in the squad for a Bundesliga game for the first time, the clash with FC Augsburg came too early for Chadarc Akolo. The winning goal-scorer from the clash with Mainz is currently struggling with a thigh problem.
7th minute | The first opening for the match for VfB. Augsburg initially clear their lines from a corner. Josip Brekalo takes possession on the left and plays into the path of Dennis Aogo. The VfB full-back breaks to the by-line and squares to the centre for Simon Terodde, whose subsequent shot proves well off target. |
14th minute | This time Anastasios Donis breaks on the right and plays a low pass to the centre, but the on-rushing Simon Terodde narrowly misses out on making a connection. |
45th +1. minute | A chance for Rani Khedira. Having taken possession on the right, the midfielder bursts into the box and pace and gets a shot away. Ron-Robert Zieler just a foot out to clear the danger. |
65th minute | Anastasios Donis paces through on the left and lets fly from just outside the box. FCA keeper Marwin Hitz is quickly down to his right to make the save. |
83rd minute | The best opportunity of the second period for VfB: An unsuccessful attempt to clear by Augsburg sees the ball drop for Dennis Aogo, who fired a pass into the centre for Daniel Ginczek. The VfB striker doesn’t make a clean connection and sends his shot wide of the mark. |
90.+1. minute | The last attempt of the game from Takuma Asano. The Japanese international’s shot from 16 meters out is unconvincing. |
Hannes Wolf:
It was a fair draw. To put in a performance like this one today at the end of such a busy week of football is fantastic – also considering the fact we were without Christian Gentner and Chadrac Akolo.
Summed-up
No way through! In their third home match of the season, VfB remain undefeated – not least thanks to another solid defensive performance, with a back-line structured around the returning Holger Badstuber, who impressed upon his comeback. VfB had the better of the play on the day, but in spite of the introduction of Daniel Ginczek in the 71st minute, the Wasenelf were unable to penetrate up front. The chances created by Hannes Wolf’s men were sadly left untaken.
