VfB enjoyed an ideal footballing afternoon this Saturday. In beautiful summery temperatures, on the VfBfairplay matchday, Tayfun Korkut’s men beat SV Werder Bremen 2-0, in front of a capacity crowd of 58,932 in the Mercedes-Benz Arena. With the three home points, the Wasenelf mathematically guaranteed their top-flight status for the coming campaign on matchday 31. Captain Christian Gentner put the hosts in front, with Berkay Özcan making sure of the victory in injury-time.
Personnel
The VfB coach opted to make just one change to the side that began against Hannover 96 last weekend, with Santiago Ascacibar returning from suspension to replace Andreas Beck, who will miss out on the rest of the season with a partial rupture to the frontal cruciate ligament of his knee. Benjamin Pavard was passed fit again, having injured ankle ligaments against Hannover, and kept his place from the outset.
13th minute | Both sides threw caution to the wind from the outset, but clear chances on goal initially failed to materialise – until the 13th minute. Delivering a cross from the left, Emiliano Insua found Christian Gentner climbing in the centre to head VfB into the lead. An ideal start for the side in the shirts with the infamous red hoop. |
27th minute | The next chance for VfB. Daniel Ginczek heads the ball back into the path of Mario Gomez, whose shot on the turn is deflected away for a corner. |
32nd minute | The next threat for Bremen. Dennis Aogo tests Werder keeper Jiri Pavlenka with a low driven free-kick, which the Czech gets down to parry. |
45th minute | The best chance for the visitors on the stroke of half-time. Florian Kainz gets a shot away in the box but drags the effort wide of the target (43'). Soon after the half-time whistle sounds in the capacity filled Mercedes-Benz Arena: The fans in the stadium are enjoying the beautiful weather and a deserved lead for the Wasenelf. |
49th minute | Bremen’s Jerome Gondorf tried his luck from distance. Ron-Robert Zieler goes full stretch to turn the ball away for a corner. |
64th minute | After ten minutes of action between the areas, VfB’s Benjamin Pavard sends a ball forward for Mario Gomez, whose shot fails to hit the target. |
66th minute | Fortune favours the Wasenelf! Bremen‘s Jerome Gondorf is unimpeded but unable to control his shot, sending the ball well wide of the mark. |
88th minute | The chance to seal the deal. On the break, Christian Gentner feeds Anastasios Donis, but the substitute is denied by Jiri Pavlenka. |
90th minute +1 | And there it is! In injury-time, Berkay Özcan takes on a square ball from Anastasios Donis to make it 2-0. |
Mario Gomez:
It’s a fantastic feeling to now have assured our top-flight status. We had been in a very good position, but now we have finally sealed the deal. I am really delighted for the two lads who haven’t played much of late, combined to score such a great goal. The atmosphere in the stadium was exceptional. I’ve really got to compliment the fans for that.
Summed-up
A perfect blend of stability and the necessary effectiveness in front of goal saw the Cannstatt Boys claim all three points against SV Werder Bremen. In the first-half, VfB had the better of the opportunities and duly took the lead through captain Christian Gentner. In the second period, the Wasenelf had at times the required luck on their side and, at the end of the ninety minutes, VfB celebrated another deserved home victory and the knowledge that they will definitely be playing top-flight Bundesliga football again next season.
