The spectators witnessed a debut for new VfB signing Philipp Förster and a frantic finale to the match at the Continental Arena, which ended with a first away win of the season for head coach Tim Walter’s side.
Team news
There was a new face in the starting line-up for the Cannstatt boys in the form of Förster, who signed from SV Sandhausen nearly two weeks ago. He replaced Gonzalo Castro in one of four changes. Marc Oliver Kempf returned to captain the side in place of Nathaniel Phillips, who dropped to the bench along with Atakan Karazor and Hamadi Al Ghaddioui. They were replaced by Orel Mangala and Nicolas Gonzalez.
24th minute | First chance, first goal for VfB. From a Philipp Klement corner, Pascal Stenzel’s shot is blocked by Jahn captain Marco Grüttner. Gonzalez reacts quickest to the rebound to make it 1-0 and score his third goal in four appearances this season. |
45th minute | VfB go in at half-time with a 1-0 lead. |
71st minute | The hosts equalise. Referee Tobias Stieler awards a penalty after a coming-together between Stenzel and Jann-Christopher George in the area, and Max Besuschkow converts from the spot. |
76th minute | VfB regain the lead as Holger Badstuber heads in Daniel Didavi’s cross. |
90+2nd minute | Walter's charges look to have wrapped up the three points when substitute Al Ghaddioui scores against his former club with a low shot from the edge of the area to make it 3-1. |
90+3rd minute | It’s not over yet, though. Federico Palacios pulls a goal back for Regensburg to set up a nervy ending for VfB, but they hang on to the three points. |
Holger Badstuber:
We're happy with the three points. I'm happy with my goal, although I'd have preferred to keep a clean sheet. We need to keep working hard.
Summary
VfB were made to sweat for their three points a little too much at Regensburg. Walter's men dominated for large periods of the game, took the lead with their first chance and also came up with the right response to the equaliser. When they went 3-1 up in added time, victory looked secure before the immediate reply from the home side made it a tense final few minutes. All in all, though, it was a deserved victory for the visitors.
