Hard-fought three points

VfB battled to a 1-0 win on Monday evening away to VfL Bochum in front of a crowd of 18,090. Stuttgart squandered a number of excellent chances but never lost heart, and substitute Hamadi Al Ghaddioui duly broke the deadlock shortly before the final whistle.

Personnel

There was just one change in the VfB starting line-up from the team which beat Aue at home last time out. Roberto Massimo was back from the muscle tear in his right calf and replaced Nicolas Gonzalez, who was both suspended (after a fifth yellow card) and injured (groin muscle tear).

Highlights
5th minute VfB create a good chance early on. A corner from Daniel Didavi is headed towards the bottom left-hand corner from 12 yards out by Gonzalo Castro, and Bochum ‘keeper Manuel Riemann has to be at full stretch to keep the ball out.
45th minute The match is goalless going into half-time, with the lads from Cannstatt having failed to make the most of their chances. They also had to be wary of Bochum counter-attacks, with Simon Zoller crossing the ball for the hosts in the 27th minute and finding Silvère Ganvoula, who fails to make decent contact with his header.
80th minute After little of note at either end in the second half, Silas Wamangituka picks off a stray pass from Bochum’s Saulo Decarli and the Congolese striker feeds substitute Al Ghaddioui, who fires home to make it 1-0.
90th minute + 2 Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel ensures the three points for VfB as he deflects a long-range shot from Bochum’s Robert Zulj past the post.

Daniel Didavi :

That was hard work. In the first half we did well, built up pressure and moved the ball around, but we failed to take the lead and that meant that it was end-to-end stuff in the second half. The main thing is that everyone fought hard and again we managed to keep a clean sheet.

Summary

It was VfB’s determination which paid off in Bochum on Monday night. After dominating the first half and creating a number of decent chances, Stuttgart looked a little off the pace after the break but head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo’s men did not let their heads drop. They continued to press Bochum into mistakes and duly capitalised on one of those to record a 1-0 win which draws them level with second-placed Hamburger SV in the table.
