Match summary
The fans at the Voith Arena were treated to a hard-fought contest, with VfB enjoying more of the ball and Heidenheim managing to keep the visitors at bay with full-blooded challenges. Sebastian Hoeneß’s side made the most of their first major opportunity of the game on 20 minutes, when Maximilian Mittelstädt opened the scoring.
Heidenheim responded four minutes before the break when Enzo Millot lost possession and Paul Wanner capitalised to make it 1-1, but VfB restored their lead through Millot’s strike in first-half stoppage time.
The hosts applied heavy pressure in search of a second-half equaliser but Jan Schöppner was denied a leveller by a superb Alex Nübel save. And when Fabian Rieder was brought down in the area five minutes from time, Nick Woltemade coolly converted the resulting penalty to complete a 3-1 win for VfB.
Goals
20th minute: Woltemade does brilliantly to set up the unmarked Mittelstädt in the Heidenheim box and the defender fires a low shot into the right-hand corner.
41st minute: Millot gives away possession and Wanner slams the ball into the right corner from 23 metres.
45th minute +2: Woltemade feeds Josha Vagnoman, whose fine delivery from the right is headed in by Millot.
85th minute: Woltemade fires home from the spot to complete the scoring after a foul on Rieder.
