“Intensive but nice days”

In an interview with VfB TV on Tuesday, Waldemar Anton assessed the friendly against Sion and the intense preparations for the second half of the season in Spain.

Jumps, runs, passing drills – VfB defender Waldemar Anton is still smiling on day nine of the training camp in Marbella. “It’s going well,” said Anton, who doesn’t mind the strenuous sessions. “The days have been very intensive but also nice. We’ve been able to spend a lot of time together, we’ve laughed a lot on and off the pitch. It’s a good mix, you can train hard here too. It’s been hard work and it’s normal that the legs are tired for a few days – that’s what training camps are like. It will help us during the season and the run-in, though.”

Successes like the 3-0 win in the friendly against Sion prove that it’s the right approach. “We produced a good performance, but there are obviously still points that we need to improve,” summarised Anton. “The sequences in our play were good. You saw that each and every one of us has much higher limits than people think. I’m happy that we won – wins always do us good.”

In the sessions on Tuesday, the focus already moved to the next match against Sparta Prague on Thursday (kick-off 15:30 CET). “Friendlies are important,” added the 26-year-old. “We need to go into the game with more concentration, even if the legs are tired. If we manage to overcome that factor in friendlies, then we’ll also overcome it in the league.”
