Big win over Bielefeld

VfB earned a 5-2 friendly win against Arminia Bielefeld over 120 minutes in Kufstein, but the victory was marred by an injury to Chris Führich.

VfB Stuttgart rounded off their training camp in Kufstein with a deserved 5-2 triumph over Bundesliga rivals Arminia Bielefeld in a 120-minute match.

Roberto Massimo struck twice to put Pellegrino Matarazzo’s charges ahead (34’, 39’), before Bielefeld reduced the deficit five minutes before half-time through Florian Krüger, and equalised via Joakim Nilsson in the 73rd minute.

Matarazzo’s side had too much for their opponents in the final half-hour, however, and ultimately recorded a merited win thanks to strikes from Erik Thommy (96’) and Mo Sankoh (104’, 113’).

There was some bad news too, though, as new signing Chris Führich broke his collarbone and requires corrective surgery.

VfB head coach Matarazzo: “Overall I think it was ok. We played very well in the first half, had Bielefeld completely under control and our counter-pressing was good. We didn’t get into the second half so well and didn’t have the right kind of energy I want to see out on the pitch. We were good again towards the end.”

After the final whistle, Matarazzo also confirmed that Wataru Endo will be the team captain in 2021/22. “I decided on Wataru because he’s someone who leaves space for others to shoulder responsibility as well. If Wataru is ever unavailable we’ve got Waldemar Anton behind him, who is also among the team’s leaders.”

VfB Stuttgart Line-up:

Bredlow (62' Hornung, 91' Schock), Anton (62' Ito), Kempf (62' Mack), Mavropanos (62' Stenzel), Kalajdzic (46' Al Ghaddioui, 91' Sankoh), Didavi (62' Beyaz), Karazor (62' Nartey), Förster (62' Thommy), Klement (62' Klimowicz), Sosa (62' Cissé), Massimo (46' Führich, 56' Churlinov, 101' Coulibaly)
