“This club is unique”

A few days after the dramatic season finale, VfB head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo looks back at the past nine months and ahead to the coming season.

Pellegrino Matarazzo on…

… the season just gone:

“That was an exhausting season that we’ve just gone through together. It was full of setbacks and hurdles for us to overcome, and we managed to do that as a team. What proved critical was the fact that we kept our cool and our focus, and never lost our belief in what we were doing.”

… the outlook for next season:

“We changed our style of play to a certain extent over the winter as we needed to show a little more solidity. Having said that, we still want to play the kind of football where we play a higher press and have more possession. We’ll find the right balance, based of course on what the team is capable of, and get the right blend of attractive and efficient football.”

… squad planning:

“We’re in talks with players but there’s nothing that we can reveal officially yet. I would however like to say how grateful I am to all of the players in our squad last season. Even those who only played minor roles contributed to the fact that we managed to avoid relegation. I can already sense a feeling of anticipation ahead of next season.“

… his own future:

“Leaving VfB was never an option for me and I’m very grateful and happy that I was allowed to do the job through to a successful conclusion and that we managed to keep cool heads despite everything. This club is unique – once you’ve been part of it then VfB is in your heart forever.”

The VfB players will return for performance tests on 25 and 26 June, with training set to start on 27 June. They will then continue their pre-season preparations at a training camp in Allgäu from 9 to 16 July.
