Even though VfB have no chance of improving their league position on the 34th and final matchday of the season away to Schalke, there will still be plenty to play for against the Royal Blues. The team will be looking to maintain their rhythm with two relegation play-offs ahead of them once the regular season is over. "We need to maintain our concentration – we’ve got the most important weeks of the season still to come," said Chadrac Akolo after training on Tuesday.
The 3-0 win at home to VfL Wolfsburg last Saturday confirmed that VfB would finish 16th and therefore no lower than the relegation play-off spot. The victory was a boost not only in terms of the league table but also for the atmosphere around the club "We're not losing our focus. It’s up to us players now to give something back to our fans after all the support they’ve given us throughout the season," Akolo added.
Timo Baumgartl and Erik Thommy returned to training on Tuesday. Baumgartl was back among his teammates after getting over a bout of stomach flu, while Thommy (ankle injury) was confined to running on his own, away from the main group.
