Opposition profile: Focus on Hertha BSC

VfB Stuttgart welcome Hertha BSC to the Mercedes-Benz Arena on Saturday as the first half of the 2018/19 campaign enters its final week. Find out everything you need to know about the capital club in our opposition profile.

Form

After a run of six Bundesliga games without a win, Hertha have picked up maximum points from their last two matches away at Hannover 96 and at home to Eintracht Frankfurt. Pal Dardai’s side also held leaders Borussia Dortmund to a draw and even managed to beat BVB’s closest challengers Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayern Munich.

The Old Lady, who finished tenth last term, are currently in sixth position in the league, level on points with Frankfurt. They have suffered only three defeats so far this season - only Dortmund have lost fewer games - but they have picked up more draws (five) than any other team in the division.

Captain

Vedad Ibisevic was handed the captain’s armband at Hertha in 2016 - a year after joining the club from VfB, where he played from 2012 to 2015. With 301 Bundesliga appearances to his name, the 34-year-old striker is the capital club’s most experienced player.

A former Bosnia and Herzegovina international, Ibisevic has made more appearances for Hertha than any other club and is set to make his 100th league outing for the Old Lady at the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

Top goalscorers

Twenty-four-year-old Slovakia international Ondrej Duda is Hertha’s most prolific attacker alongside Ibisevic. Both players have registered six goals and one assist so far this term.

Newcomers

Hertha sporting director Michael Preetz made four permanent signings over the summer, bringing in Valentino Lazaro (RB Salzburg), Lukas Klünter (1. FC Köln), Javairo Dilrosun (Manchester City) and Pascal Köpke (Erzgebirge Aue). Derrick Luckassen (PSV) and Marko Grujic (Liverpool) also joined the club on season-long loans.
