Working towards the next step

The VfB players have taken part in several tough training sessions and a friendly during the current international break. Midfielder Erik Thommy looks back on an eventful few days and discusses the upcoming trip to Leverkusen.

While Benjamin Pavard, Timo Baumgartl and Santiago Ascacibar are in action for their respective national teams on Friday and Saturday, the majority of the VfB squad are in Bad Cannstatt preparing for the upcoming Bundesliga game at Bayer 04 Leverkusen on Friday 23 November (kick-off 20:30 CET). “The win against Nürnberg was a small but important step for us,” said Erik Thommy in an interview with VfB TV. “We’re looking ahead now and want to lift ourselves away from the foot of the table, bit by bit.”

The VfB players who have not been selected for international duty have been involved in “tough” training sessions this week, according to Thommy. Markus Weinzierl’s side were also held to a goalless draw by third division outfit VfR Aalen in a friendly on Thursday. “It was an important test, especially for the players who haven’t featured that much recently,” added the midfielder.

After a busy few days, Thommy and his colleagues can now look forward to a weekend off before preparations for the trip to Leverkusen begin in earnest at the start of next week.
