1-0 has proven the most regular result for VfB in recent weeks. Following the home win against Borussia Mönchengladbach and the away victory in Augsburg, coach Tayfun Korkut were happy to settle for the same result against Eintracht Frankfurt, in front of a crowd of 55,418 in the Mercedes-Benz Arena. The all-important goal on the day was scored by a winter-signing within the first quarter-hour.
Personnel
Tayfun Korkut opted not to make any changes to his starting eleven and sent out the same side that began in last weekend’s first away win of the season in Augsburg.
9th minute | The first shot in anger from the visitors from Frankfurt. Danny da Costa’s shot lands on the crossbar. |
13th minute | VfB take the lead with their first chance of the match. Christian Gentner wins possession in midfield and the hosts launch a lightening quick attack. Daniel Ginczek powers past his marker and gets his shot away from a tight angle. The advancing keeper Lukas Hradecky is beaten, but Marco Russ slides in to clear. The ball bounces back into play off the foot of the post and Erik Thommy is quickest to react, firing home to make it 1-0. An ideal start for Tayfun Korkut’s men. |
33rd minute | The side in the shirts with the infamous red hoop remain the better of the two sides. Just as was the case in Augsburg, Timo Baumgartl & Co. play out from an extremely solid defence and, on the odd occasion that the ball does get through, Ron-Robert Zieler is there to avert the danger. The keeper makes an important one-footed stop from Ante Rebic. |
48th minute | VfB begin the second-half with a chance to double their advantage. Mario Gomez breaks through on the right and finds Daniel Ginczek. The striker with the number 33, skips past keeper Lukas Hradecky, but is disturbed in attempting to get his shot in on goal (46'). Two minutes later, Daniel Ginczek is again in the focus. From an Erik Thommy corner, the striker gets a header in, but Lukas Hradecky makes the save (48'). |
65th minute | It has developed into a pacy and intensive tie, with both sides doing everything in their power to hold the opposition a good distance from their respective goal. |
90th minute +4 | Whether it be Timo Baumgartl, Benjamin Pavard, Holger Badstuber or one of the others in the shirts with the infamous red hoop, the commitment in the challenges is flawless. VfB consistently frustrate their opponent’s efforts to get forward – and that until the final whistle – which duly sounds after four minutes of added-time. |
Holger Badstuber:
Good defensive work is the basis for our success. Up front, we are still trying to find our order and we should have added a second goal. That’s not happening for us at the moment. We had exceptional support from the fans.
Summed-up
VfB picked up just where they had left off in recent weeks, with Christian Gentner & Co. approaching the clash against the side from Hessen with determination, commitment and precision. It was again the captain’s exemplary will that was to prove the basis for yet another victory for the Wasenelf. The three points against Eintracht Frankfurt marked VfB’s eighth home win of the season, with Ron-Robert Zieler also keeping his eighth clean-sheet.
