On record course

VfB are about to set a new all-time attendance record in the 2. Bundesliga. And support could prove a decisive factor in the race for promotion.

As the final whistle blew on VfB’s home game on Monday evening against 1. Union Berlin at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, some 57,000 fans in White-Red rose to celebrate the Wasenelf success. The applause in the Mercedes-Benz Arena was well-earned, following Hannes Wolf’s men’s impressive 3-1 victory over the visitors from the capital. "We could hear and feel the fans getting behind us. That gave us an additional boost," noted Timo Baumgartl directly after the match. "The fans played their part in securing the win. It’s an absolute dream to play in front of such a crowd," added goal-scorer Simon Terodde.

Thousands of VfB fans to travel to Nuremberg

With 57,000 packed into the Mercedes-Benz Arena, with the exception of the away block, the stadium was a complete sell-out once again. Following the season opener against FC St. Pauli, as well as the home games against Dynamo Dresden and the derby clash with Karlsruher SC, Monday night’s match was the fourth time this season that VfB’s Arena was filled to capacity this season. And the Mercedes-Benz Arena will most definitely be sold-out at least once more this season: On the final match-day, when the Cannstatt Boys take on FC Würzburger Kickers on May 21st (kick-off 15:30 CET). In addition, some 55,000 tickets for the game against FC Erzgebirge Aue have already changed hands – and it’s highly likely that the remaining tickets for that game will also be snapped up.

Should that prove the case, VfB would set a new all-time attendance record in the 2. Bundesliga. In the 15 home games thus far, VfB have notched up an average attendance of 49,317. With the remaining games against Aue and Würzburg, that average attendance would be pushed beyond the 50,000 mark. A complete novelty! The record tally until now has been held by 1. FC Köln, with an average attendance of 46,138 in the 2013/2014 campaign. "Having broken the 50,000 mark in club members, this record is further confirmation of the support VfB can rely upon. That’s phenomenal," noted VfB president Wolfgang Dietrich.

And the Cannstatt Boys can rely on exceptional support this Saturday away to 1. FC Nürnberg (kick-off 13:00 CET). Some 7,000 VfB fans have already snapped up tickets for the clash with FCN. However, it is expected that over 10,000 Stuttgart fans will make their way to the Franken region, to get behind their team.
