VfB begin their 2017/2018 DFB-Cup campaign with a trip to Cottbus. 20 years after the cup final clash, there will be a repeat of the 1997 final against FC Energie Cottbus. The games in the first round of the competition will be played out between August 11th and 14th. The clash between Hannes Wolf’s men and Energie will take place at the 'Stadion der Freundschaft'. It’s the second time the two sides meet in the domestic cup competition. An exact date for the game will be finalised in the coming week.
Energie Cottbus finished the recently completed 2016/2017 Regionalliga season behind second-places Carl Zeiss Jena and thus missed out on promotion to the 'Third League'. "We certainly won’t be underestimating Energie Cottbus, but our clear goal is to progress to the second round," remarked VfB Sporting Director Jan Schindelmeiser on the pairing.
