Defeat for Guinea

It promised to be a tough battle and a tense affair as the second match day in Group B saw Portugal face Denmark, with Germany to take on and under-pressure Dutch side in the evening kick-off. Holland had lost their opener to Denmark in what was something of a shock 1-0 success for Morten Olsen’s side, whilst Germany beat Portugal. Against the Portuguese, the side built around defensive midfielder William Kvist from VfB had the chance to secure their progression to the quarter finals with a win.

On the way to the finals of the European Championships, Denmark had twice defeated Portugal, but the Danes were unable to repeat their previous form on the day. In Lviv, Ukraine, the Portuguese side, including superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, secured the points with a last minute winner.

Portugal had taken the lead in the 25th minute through Pepe, who headed home from close range, and then Héider Postiga double Portugal’s advantage in the 36th minute. Shortly before the break, Nicklas Bendtner reduced the deficit and ten minutes before full time he struck again to level the scores. In the 87th minute though, substitute Silvestre Varela popped up with a winner for Portugal to make the final score 3-2. William Kvist & Co. will face Germany this coming Sunday evening in the final Group B game.
