Avoidable defeat

VfB coach Armin Veh made just two changes to his starting eleven for the away game in Hamburg compared to the side which began in last weekend's 2-0 win over VfL Bochum. Ricardo Osorio, who was left on the bench, and the injured Ludovic Magnin (muscular strain) were replaced by former HSV defender Khalid Boulahrouz and the recently rested Pavel Pardo.
With just over a quarter hour played at the HSH Nordbank Arena, Thomas Hitzlsperger attempted to dispossess David Jarolim in the penalty area but brushed against the Czech international, who crashed to the floor as if struck by lightning, and referee Günter Perl, who was convinced by HSV mans appeal, awarded the home side a penalty kick. German international Piotr Trochowski took on the responsibility from the spot and hammered home to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Midway through the first half, VfB had a chance to equalise when Arthur Boka flashed a delivery from the left across the goal mouth and Mario Gomez came within inches of connecting with, but there was to be no joy for the VfB striker. Thomas Hitzlsperger, Pavel Pardo and Roberto Hilbert all tried their luck from distance before the break but, for all their efforts, VfB could find no way through and the home side took their narrow 1-0 lead into the break.

Deflected effort decides the tie

VfB were the more determined side after the re-start and came close to drawing level after Mario Gomez picked out Roberto Hilbert, but the wingers volleyed effort failed to test the HSV keeper. In the 64th minute, Pavel Pardo drove a free-kick from the left directly at goal but just missed the top right corner with his effort. Seconds later, Thomas Hitzlsperger drove a shot with his weaker right foot over the crossbar. At the other end, HSV managed to double their lead from out of nowhere. Following a free-kick delivery from Trochowski,

Khalid Boulahrouz and Mario Gomez both attempted to clear, but the ball fell to Joris Mathijsen, whose shot on goal took a wicked deflection off Gomez, which sent Jens Lehmann the wrong way and put HSV 2-0 up. For all of their efforts and despite a spirited performance, VfB make their way back to Stuttgart with nothing to show for their determined efforts.
