The Mercedes-Benz Arena

For generations now, football fans from Stuttgart and the surrounding region have been regularly ascending on the 'Cannstatter Wasen'. Built in 1933, VfB Stuttgart's home ground has seen many facelifts through the years and decades. The 'Neckarstadion' became the 'Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion' and then, in July 2008, the 'Mercedes-Benz Arena'. The most notable addition to date took place in 1993, when the complete stadium was covered by an imposing, and still visible, roof construction. Prior to the 2006 FIFA World Cup, the ground went through its most recent modernising phase. Spectators on the main stands could now enjoy first class conditions. What was left were the rather dated 'Curved' stands and the running track, which, despite the traditionally loud and passionate VfB fans, remained something of an atmosphere barrier.
