Home defeat to Werder

On the occasion of their 1,500th game in the Bundesliga, on Sunday afternoon, VfB Stuttgart crashed 0-2 at home to Werder Bremen. The home side suffered an early set-back as Claudio Pizarro put the visitors 1-0 up after three minutes and in the second period, Aaron Hunt doubled the Bremen lead to make the final score 0-2.
VfB coach Markus Babbel made four changes to the side which started in midweek against Unirea Urziceni in the Champions League with Khalid Boulahrouz, Clemens Walch, Cacau and Julian Schieber starting in place of Serdar Tasci, Timo Gebhart, Pavel Pogrebnyak and Ciprian Marica.

Early goal unsettles VfB

In a capacity filled Mercedes-Benz Arena, both sides pushed for an early goal - and it was the visitors who were to be rewarded with their very first attack! Marko Marin did excellently to find himself some space on the left from which to swing in a cross and Peruvian striker Claudio Pizarro stole in at the back post to head into the top of the net, leaving VfB keeper Jens Lehmann absolutely no chance of rescuing his side. Despite going a goal behind, VfB continued to press forward optimistically and were unlucky not to level things in the 34th minute when Julian Schieber tested Tim Wiese. The Werder keeper was able to deal with the effort and so, VfB went into the half time break trailing by a goal to nil.

Hunt seals the points

After the re-start, the home side failed to produce the same attacking prowess as they had in the first period and failed to really threaten throughout the remainder of the tie - with Bremen appearing to be quicker to the ball every time. In the 51st minute, Mesut Özil took a quick free-kick and fed Aaron Hunt, who drove towards the VfB goal and neatly tucked the ball past the advancing Jens Lehmann to make it 0-2.

Just five minutes later the Stuttgart keeper had to be quick off his mark to prevent Marko Marin increasing the damage. VfB continued to have problems in settling on the ball and could find no way of unhinging the visitors defence. In the whole of the second 45 minutes, Markus Babbel's eleven never once truly created difficulties in front of the Werder goal. In the 82nd minute, Cacau did manage to get a shot away, which Naldo blocked. The resulting corner again proved far too harmless and Thomas Schaaf's side could make the trip back to the north of Germany with all three points in the bag.
