VfB tame the 'Wolves'

VfB Stuttgart have started the second half of the season with a win. On Saturday evening at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, Christian Gross' men put on a strong performance and ran out eventual 3-1 winners over VfL Wolfsburg.

By comparison to the side that won the last game before the winter break - a 3-1 success against TSG Hoffenheim - VfB coach Christian Gross made three changes to his starting eleven. For Arthur Boka, who is on duty with the Ivory Coast at the ‘African Cup of Nations, new signing Cristian Molinaro made his Bundesliga debut. Roberto Hilbert got the nod ahead of Timo Gebhart on the right side of midfield and Georg Niedermeier replaced the injured Matthieu Delpierre, alongside Serdar Tasci, at the heart of the VfB defence. Sami Khedira wore the captain's armband.

Hilbert opens the scoring

The game began with a shock for VfB. A misunderstanding between Niedermeier and Hilbert lead to a perfect opportunity for the German champions to open the scoring with just three minutes on the clock. The ball fell to Grafite, who burst forward with only Sven Ulreich to beat, but the young keeper kept his cool and denied the Brazilian striker with a brave stop. As the half progressed, Christian Gross' men took ever more control of the tie and in the 28th minute, took a well earned lead. Roberto Hilbert, who had been causing the visitors a problem down the right side, got on the end of a Ciprian Marica cross, thanks to a knock on by Pogrebnyak, and hammered the ball past the VfL keeper to give VfB a 1-0 lead, which they would hold onto going into the break.
