Bayer batter VfB

Against high-flying Bayer 04 Leverkusen, VfB lacked the necessary concentration, failed to create in front of goal and never really took up the fight. In the end, trainer Markus Babbel's side found themselves on the receiving end of a heavy 0-4 defeat against a strong Leverkusen side.

Two early chances

VfB had actually made quite a positive start to the game and had good early chances through Cacau and Pavel Pogrebnyak, but the opening goal was to fall at the other end! Following a chance for Erin Derdyiok and a shot against the post by Toni Kroos, Stefan Kießling latched on to a downward header by Sami Hyypiä to make it 1-0 from close range. In the 31st minute, Kroos was allowed to shoot unchallenged in the penalty area and, luckily for VfB, against struck the up-right. The young midfield playmaker was involved again eight minutes later as he delivered an inch perfect cross for Derdyiok to head home and double the Bayer lead from eleven meters out. Shortly before the end of the half, Pogrebnyak had a wonderful opportunity to throw VfB a lifeline but was denied by the foot of keeper Rene Adler and the home side took their 2-0 lead into the break.

Heaping on the misery

Markus Babbel reacted to the first half performance and introduced Julian Schieber for Cacau and Roberto Hilbert for Timo Gebhart at the break. Unfortunately the changes didn't have the hoped reaction on the pitch and Leverkusen continued their attacking plan. Both Toni Kroos and Arturo Vidal had had chances to increase the Bayer goal difference but proved initially unsuccessful. In the 52nd minute, Roberto Hilbert did manage to get a shot away for VfB but could only find the side netting.

Top

With almost an hour played, the impressive Toni Kroos played a wonderful one-two with Reinartz in the midfield and then dribbled through the VfB half before timing a perfect through ball for Kießling, who slotted past Jens Lehmann from 14 meters out to make it 3-0. Late on Lehmann was involved again, bringing down Derdiyok in the penalty area to concede a penalty, which was converted powerfully by Stefan Kießling to complete his hat-trick and damn VfB to a hefty 4-0 defeat.
